Most women are aware that high blood pressure during pregnancy,
gestational hypertension, is a problem that can effect the baby
and requires treatment. When a woman's blood pressure is lower than
the average, while not a problem, can also be the cause of alarm.
The average or "normal" blood pressure is considered
to be 120/80. The higher number, systolic pressure, represents the
pressure in the arteries each time the heart beats or contracts.
The lower number, diastolic pressure, is the pressure in the arteries
between each beat. Hypotension is the term given to low blood pressure.
An individual person's normal blood pressure is dependent on many
factors including their age, sex and fitness. A finding of a lower
than average blood pressure in an individual who is otherwise in
a good state of health is a positive sign. It is frequently found
in people who a physically fit and may be the result of regular
exercise. It is a sign of an efficient cardiovascular system. It
can also be a sign that the person is relaxed and at ease during
the consultation. It is not considered a medical condition and does
not require treatment.
During pregnancy it is possible to experience a sudden drop in
blood pressure that causes the person to faint. This is usually
preceded by dizziness, sweating and nausea. If you are aware that
you have a normally low blood pressure you are more vulnerable to
this experience. It is more likely to happen during hot weather,
if you have skipped a meal or if you are not drinking enough fluids.
It is important that you recongnise the symptoms and act accordingly
before you faint. You will need to sit or, if possible, lie down
until the symptoms pass. It will only take a few minutes. If you
do not recognise the symptoms and do faint, the act of fainting
will cause the blood pressure to normalise and you will regain consciousness.
To prevent a reoccurrence, keep your fluids up, eat regularly and
stay inside during the hottest part of the day.
